Last week, the South Carolina Enforcement Division (SLED) tracked down a person of interest relating to the shooting that occurred during South Carolina State’s homecoming on October 4.
According to law enforcement, two separate shooting incidents took place on SCSU’s campus. The first took place at Hugine Suites, an on-campus residence hall, where one woman was killed, who was later identified by the Orange County Coroner as 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler. A second shooting left a male injured who was subsequently transferred to a nearby hospital, where he recovered.

Matthew McCoy, 18, was charged by SLED in connection with the shootings. A report states that McCoy pointed a firearm at another male and fired two shots after observing an argument between two groups of people.

Another male, Jimmy Lee Thompson Jr, was also arrested and charged following the shooting.
SLED also announced that the person of interest was identified, but that individual’s name has not been released.
South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers has confirmed that the suspect and the victims were not students of the university.
